The main difference between each variant is the number of decks used in the game. Other smaller differences include betting types, allowances on splits and dealer limitations.

Anatomy of Blackjack

Card Values and Basic Strategy (Hard Soft Hands)

In Blackjack all card values are as you would understand them in general. Cards 2-10 are of value two to ten. Jack, queen and king are of value ten, and ace is valued at one or eleven.

Hard Hand any two card total that does not include an ace. A hard hand is defined as such because the total of both cards includes the risk of a bust. So whereas technically a two and three (equalling five) is a hard hand by definition, during the game it is soft because there is no risk of a bust regardless of what card you hit on next.

Soft Hand any two card total involving an ace. A soft hand means there is no risk regardless of what card you hit on next. The highest soft hand is a nine and an ace (equalling 10 or 20).

Blackjack Probability

Blackjack probability is a topic that has been discussed in online gaming arguably since its inception. The probability of a specific outcome is dependable on so many variants which make Blackjack so popular. It s the unpredictable nature of the game that draws in millions and millions of fans to casinos and online casinos every day.

Determining the odds of any outcome or hand of a game of Blackjack is not something that the majority of people can calculate mentally during a game. There are simpler calculations that you can logically make, for instance, the probability of your first card being an ace is 4/52, with your second card being value ten 16/51, however if you were to complicate the equation, the probability of you getting Blackjack with an ace first would be (4/52)*(16/51) = 64/2652 = 0.024 = 1 in 41.6.

Blackjack odds and probability equations run into the millions. The more decks you play with, the more complex the probabilities become.

History of Blackjack

Take a closer look at the game of Blackjack and the History of Blackjack throughout the years. From the pioneers of the game to the strategic nuances, it s all here.

The earliest version of the game of Blackjack containing the following elements: deck of cards, player vs. dealer, winner determined by numerical value of cards, was a Spanish game called Trente-un (31). Miguel de Cervantes, best known for Don Quixote, wrote about it in the book Rinconete and

Cortadillo, published as one of his twelve Exemplary Novels in 1613. A gambling game named Trente-un appears in written works as old as 1440 (though there are several unrelated games by this name).

A variation of this game was called Bone Ace in England during the 17th century. In Cervantes' story and in Bone Ace as described by Charles Cotton in The Complete Gamester (1674), an ace can count as one or eleven. A French predecessor of Blackjack called Quinze (15) first appeared in the 16th century and was popular in casinos of France into the 19th century. An Italian card game called Sette e Mezzo (7 & 1/2) was played beginning in the 17th century. Sette Mezzo featured a 40-card deck (removing eights, nines, and tens). The remaining cards corresponded with their numerical value; face cards counted as one half.

Another French game, Trente-et-quarante (30 & 40) was played at the Spa Casino in Belgium in 1780. Trente-et-quarante, unlike most of these earlier games, was house banked, meaning the casino played against the players, taking or paying off bets by players. This game was also the first version offering an insurance bet.

The rules of modern Blackjack came together in the French game Vingt-un (or Vingt-et-un 21 ) in the middle of the 18th century. Enthusiasts promoting the game in France in the late 1700s and early 1800s included Madame Du Barry and Napoleon Bonaparte.

In 19th century America, casinos eventually adopted two rules making the game more favourable to players: allowing the players to see one of the dealer's cards, and requiring the dealer to hit hands of 16 and below, and stand on 17 and above. In the early 20th century, the game became better known as Blackjack, due to a promotion (briefly tried and long discarded) that paid a bonus if the player made 21 from the ace of spades and a black jack (jack of clubs or spades).

Following the popular academic research by Dr. Thorp and subsequent players and analysts, Blackjack became the most popular table game in casinos. Although casinos benefited from the development of basic strategy, they have generally discouraged the practice. Although numerous court decisions have established that counting cards is not a form of cheating, casinos in most jurisdictions have the right to bar players for any reason. Individual casinos also modify Blackjack rules (sometimes differing from table to table): different numbers of decks, different deck penetration, house hitting vs. standing on soft 17, limits on splitting and doubling, and offering or not offering surrender.

Books like Ken Uston's The Big Player (1977) and Ben Mezrich's Bringing Down the House (2002) described the fortunes made (and sometimes lost) by teams of Blackjack card counters. Mezrich's book became the popular film 21.

Blackjack Online

Blackjack is the most popular card game at every online or live casino. By far. And the reason for that is easy to figure out: it s an easy game to learn. It has a perfect strategy script you can follow and it pays out one of the highest rates in the casino.

Also known as 21 the basic rules of Blackjack couldn t be much simpler. Get cards that add up to 21 or as close to it as possible without going over (bust). Beat the dealer s hand (or have the dealer bust) and you win. Get a Blackjack (21) and get paid even more. Dig deeper and Blackjack unfolds into one of the most satisfying games of both luck AND skill in any casino.

BlackJack Online

If you play Blackjack live you ll likely only come across a couple of standard variations of the game (American, European), but that seems to meet the needs of most blackjack players -- particularly those that know blackjack has one of the smallest house edges in the casino.

With perfect Blackjack strategy you can reduce the house edge even further, which makes it even more appealing.

If you play Blackjack online there are literally 20+ Blackjack variations you can find that take the best parts of conventional Blackjack and tweak them slightly to add even more fun and intrigue to the game.

If we had to bet on it, we d guess Blackjack will still be the most popular casino card game 20 years from now. And Blackjack will be an even bigger part of every online casino.

Advantages to Playing Blackjack Online:

  • Wider range of table limits
  • More side bets offered
  • Massive amount of Blackjack variants offered
  • Can keep strategy charts on hand to use at table
  • Games available 24/7, 365

Blackjack Online Free

Without sounding too much like a broken record, the advantages of playing Blackjack (or any casino game) online are numerous.

Better game variety, lower minimum bets, higher payout rates, games available at all times, no tipping all of these are viable reasons in their own right to choose blackjack online.

Another great advantage, of course, is you can play it online for FREE to learn the best strategies before you ever put a dime of your own money on the table.

Sure, you can do that with a deck of cards at your own house, too. But learning online on a free demo version of the game you ll then play for real money makes for a smooth and seamless transition and helps get you perfectly comfortable with making the right decision when the pressure is on.

If you re just starting to learn optimal Blackjack strategy (which of course you should, since it reduces the house edge down under 1%), free online blackjack games are a godsend.

Hit deal over and over and over again until the right move in every situation becomes second nature. The risk is none and the rewards are (potentially) great.

Free blackjack online is also a great avenue for learning the tweaks and twists of different Blackjack variations like Blackjack Switch or Spanish 21. You might not ever come across that variation at a live casino, but if you do you ll be well prepared to take advantage.

To find the free online Blackjack games at any casino, navigate to the Blackjack games section and look for the instant play or demo version links under the name of the game.

Blackjack Online Free No Download

Another nice perk of those free online blackjack trainers? They don t require you to create an actual account at the online casino or download any software.

Most are accessible right in your Internet Browser (as long as you ve updated your browser and Flash player) and come with a companion FAQ on how to make your bets, how to double down and so on. A lot of casinos will even provide you with a trainer to practice card counting!

It really is the perfect Blackjack educational tool and a fantastic way to get comfortable at the controls before your real money gets put on the table. And you re smart to take advantage of it.

Blackjack Online Real Money

The real thrill of playing Blackjack online comes when there s real money on the table in front of you and real money you can win and cash out.

With an actual bet now in front of you, you need to be confident you can make that crucial choice to stand, hit or split and know you ve made the right play to maximize your odds of winning.

Once you ve done your training on the free blackjack game, real money blackjack is where it ll pay off. When picking an online casino for your real money blackjack play you want to a few factors into consideration:

  • Blackjack game variety
  • Side bets offered
  • Table limits
  • Live dealers offered
  • Blackjack bonuses/wagering requirement status

Blackjack Game Variety

As mentioned the real variety of Blackjack shows itself online where online casinos have added dozens of variations to keep players interested and offer new ways to make money in-game.

Game variations like Blackjack Switch, for example, give players two dealt hands and the chance to switch the second card dealt to each hand.

Two equal bets must be made and a dealer 22 is now a push with any player hand that s not a Blackjack, but if you play optimal strategy your payout percentage is just slightly under 100%.

Blackjack Switch is just the tip of the Blackjack iceberg, though. Popular Blackjack variations you can find online include:

  • Classic Blackjack
  • Crazy Blackjack
  • Progressive Blackjack
  • Atlantic City Blackjack
  • Spanish 21
  • Vegas Strip Blackjack
  • Pontoon
  • Super Fun 21
  • Double Exposure Blackjack
  • Perfect Blackjack
  • Blackjack Surrender
  • Single Deck Blackjack
  • 21 Duel Blackjack
  • Buster Blackjack
  • Double Attack Blackjack

There are more, but you get the idea. Each has subtle (or in some cases not-so-subtle) twists of the game rules and payout rates. This also changes the optimal strategy for each game, too.

These variations also work in a bunch of new side bets (21+3, perfect pairs, etc) than can pay out big sums.

Already with the lowest house edge of any casino card game, these variations can cut the house edge even more you just need to know how. That information you can find online and, as is also great with online Blackjack, you can keep them open beside you as you play online.

Micro Table Limits!

If you ve ever stepped up to a Blackjack table in a live casino and immediately stepped back because the minimum bet was way too high, that s not an issue online. Table stakes much lower can be found so you ll never not be able to find an online Blackjack game in your budget range.

One small note of caution: Blackjack games tend to count for a lower percentage when it comes to bonus clearing so be sure to check how much a casino offers for Blackjack play before you try and clear your bonus.

Blackjack Online Live Dealers

If you re a casino player that can t imagine playing Blackjack without at least a hint of the live casino buzz, the advent of modern casino software and streaming technology has proven to be a game changer.

All of the top online casinos now offer Blackjack games with live dealers you can stream from your home computer or mobile device.

Just like at a live casino you get a virtual seat facing a real person who then proceeds to deal the Blackjack hands right in front of you. You still make your play by clicking buttons on your computer but the dealer will put the actual cards and bets in play for you. Winnings are credited to your online account.

If you like to see a face across from you at the Blackjack table, this will give you that fix although be forewarned live dealer tables have limits on the amount of players they can seat and are not necessarily available 24/7 like a virtual Blackjack table is. Check our full information page here:

Blackjack Online Tournaments

Another increasingly popular twist on Blackjack (although not a variation of the game itself, is the Blackjack tournament). You ll occasionally see these at live casinos but the general gist is each player pays an entry fee and receives an equal amount of chips. The goal is to build as big a stack as possible.

After a set number of deals the players with the top chip stacks move on to a new table with top accumulators from other tables. In an Elimination Blackjack tournament the lowest chip stack gets eliminated after a certain time frame or point has been passed.

Optimal strategy for Blackjack tournaments differs from standard Blackjack but they re a fun way to mix up your Blackjack action. If you play well and get lucky, you ll add a significant win to your bankroll.

Blackjack Online Real Money USA

Blackjack aficionados in the USA can now play real money online blackjack on licensed and regulated casinos in 4 states Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania (soon to be launched).

As long as you are a resident or visiting the state and within the geographic borders you can log on and play Blackjack (or any casino game) at a certified casino.

All online casinos have an official live casino partner so you can make deposits to your account at the cage of that casino or through a number of standard deposit methods (Visa, Mastercard, debit cards, bank transfer, Neteller etc). You must be of legal age and provide the proper identification when creating your online account.

Blackjack game offerings vary depending on the casino. Some offer live dealers and some do not.

Minimum blackjack bets at the major US online casinos are usually $1 (much lower than the $5 or $10 minimums live) but can go as low as 10 cents!

PokerStars NJ Casino, partypoker NJ and 888 Casino are just a few of the online operators that offer online blackjack in New Jersey, for example.

Online Blackjack Multi-Player

Yet another twist on blackjack offered online is Multi-Player Blackjack, both for free and real money. Unlike Classic Blackjack (and most variations), where you play against the dealer alone, in multi-player blackjack you play against the other players at the table.

Much like a blackjack tournament you all start with the same number of chips. The player who then accumulates the most chips by a certain time will be the winner.

Again, optimal strategy will differ for multi-player blackjack and depend on who s playing against you so we recommend trying out one of the free versions before diving in for real-money play.

Online Blackjack Card Counting

You can t talk about Blackjack and especially online blackjack, where you re away from the stares of casino floor security without talking about card counting.

A LOT of casino players are drawn to the idea of card counting, which is basically keeping track of all the cards that have been dealt out to narrow down the odds of the cards to come.

This gives you an advantage in the sense that if you know a certain card is much more likely to come you can change your bets accordingly.

Card counting has been romanticized heavily in books and movies about blackjack and, truth be told, has been used successfully by some to make pretty good profits.

In online Blackjack, however, card counting isn t really a very profitable option. For one it s very, very hard work and difficult to do. But also, online casinos employ continuous shuffle machines which make card counting useless.

What about at a live dealer table online? That s a no again.

Live dealers for online casinos shuffle the cards frequently which makes card counting ineffective. Because of the time it takes for players to click buttons to make their plays, live dealers games online are also quite slow, meaning you just don t get a big enough edge to card count even if it worked.

So the answer is no: Card Counting is not an effective tool for online Blackjack. We wouldn t recommend it anyway. Playing a perfect strategy is the best way to minimize the house edge.

Blackjack Online Mobile

Most online casinos now offer a mobile app for iPhone and iPad and some offer native Android apps as well.

That means you can download the app from the casino or an app store and play mobile casino games on your phone or tablet like you would from your home computer.

These can be both free casino games or real money games. (Note: this is different from a free Blackjack app that only offers free play or play-money chips you can buy within the app)

Due to their simplicity and perfect fit for the mobile format slots are by far the most popular mobile casino games but Blackjack is often spread in mobile form too.

You won t find the same number of Blackjack variations you would with the full software, though. Expect just a couple classic Blackjack games you can choose from for mobile play although that will likely expand in the future, too.

A lot of casino apps do offer live dealer options so if you have the proper device that can stream in high quality you can access live dealer Blackjack games.

Welcome to this online blackjack page where you can play the best free blackjack games. The benefits of playing online are that you can learn blackjack rules in no rush and there is no actual monetary loss if you lose! You can click the menu button on the top right corner to read the rules. What's best: We also automatically save your game so you can come back anytime to play blackjack online! Remember, you don't win because you are closer to the value of 21 -- you win because your combined value of the cards is greater than that of dealer.

Blackjack Strategy

1. When the value of dealer's revealed card is 4,5 or 6, it may be fruitful to double your bet with an Ace and 4 in hand.

2. You may want to surrender if you have 16 in your hand while the dealer has a 9,10 or A.

3. You should always split if you have a pair of Aces.

4. If you get a pair of 7s, only press hit if the dealer has 8,9,10 or Ace.

Free Online Blackjack Games to Play for Fun

Blackjack is a relatively simple game, but it s still good to learn more about it and study the rules before playing, even if only for fun. Blackjack is played with standard decks of French playing cards. The number of decks might be different in various version of the game, but one to eight decks are generally used.

Each card has a certain value:

  • Cards from 2 to 10 have their face value.
  • J, Q and K have a value of 10.
  • Ace has a value of 1 or 11.

The objective of each game round is to obtain a hand that s higher in value than dealer s hand, without exceeding the value of 21.

You do this by choosing whether to "hit" (get another card) or "stand". If your cards have a combined value of 22 or more, you "bust" and automatically lose. If you don t bust, it s the dealer s turn. The dealer generally has to draw cards until getting a combined value of 17 or more (specific rules may vary), regardless of the player s cards.

If the dealer busts, the player wins, unless they ve previously busted, too. If neither of them busts, they compare the values of their hands to see who has won. You can either win double your stake, get your money back (in case of a "draw" or "push") or lose the wagered money if the dealer has a better combination.

Furthermore, if you hit a Blackjack (a combination of Ace and any card with a value of 10), you win 2.5-times you bet, unless the dealer has a Blackjack, too. If the latter happens, it s a draw and you get the wagered money back.

Note: These were the general and simplified rules that should be sufficient if you want to play Blackjack just for free. However, it s also wise to study more detailed Blackjack rules and read more about types of Blackjack, as each game can have slightly different rules. If you are a beginner, reading our "How to play Blackjack" article will be helpful, too.

Practice Blackjack basic strategy before playing for real money

Blackjack is one of the casino games that require some knowledge and practice to be played optimally. Free Blackjack games that you can play without wagering real money are a great tool to master the so-called basic strategy that will help you reach the game s theoretical maximum RTP.

Depending on the rules of the exact version of Blackjack you play, the payout ratio you can reach might differ a bit, but you always need to know what to do in every situation to reach it. Learn more about the optimal way to play Blackjack in our article about basic strategy.

The basic strategy, however, is not about card counting or any other "trick" to beat the casino. It s about making good decisions and minimizing the casino s advantage over you. If this topic interests you, feel free to read more about it in our article about card counting in Blackjack, but you will not be able to utilize or practice it in games played for fun.

Note: Thanks to card counting, Blackjack is one of the few casino games in which players can actually be profitable. Of course, casinos don t like this, so if they suspect a player is counting cards, they ask them to leave. There are also other measures implemented to make card counting more difficult or simply unusable. In online casinos, card counting can be used to some degree only in Blackjack with a live dealer. And because of frequently shuffled and exchanged decks of cards, it s most likely not a profitable strategy anyways.

Learn about side bets in Blackjack

Many casinos and game providers add various side bets to Blackjack, which can make the game a bit more exciting, but generally also increase the casino s advantage. You can take advantage of a side bet by placing a separate bet, which is settled independently from the "regular" Blackjack bet.

The most widely spread side bet is called "21+3", in which you can win a certain multiple of money placed on this bet, depending on your two cards and the dealer s "upcard" (the visible card). The highest paying combination consists of three cards with the same rank and the same suit (e.g. three Queens of clubs).

The selection of side bets is much wider on brick-and-mortar and virtual Blackjack tables around the world, however, there is one thing all side bets have in common. They all have an RTP that s worse than the RTP of Blackjack played without side bets. If you want to maximize your RTP, you should stay away from them, but they also increase the game s volatility, what might be preferable for some players. One thing is certain feel free to try them out when playing one of our free Blackjack games just for fun.

Free Blackjack for mobile devices

Not all online casino games are currently available in a version suitable for mobile devices, but many of them are. This applies to the Blackjack games in our database, too. If you are using a mobile device, you can apply our filter "Mobile Devices Supported" to see only Blackjack games you will be able to play. The selection is slightly smaller, but there are still plenty of games to choose from.

There is still a number of games that require Flash Player to be played, but it is decreasing, as many old games are being reworked using newer technologies supported by mobile devices.

Unfortunately, Blackjack tables with a live dealer usually can't be played for free, but you will be able to play them for real money in many online casinos. Casinos with live roulette usually also offer live Blackjack games, but, to be absolutely sure, explore sites like which specialize in live Blackjack.

Other types of free games available on Casino Guru

If you are also interested in other types of casino games, you can check out our full collection of free games. You can play slots, video poker, roulette and other games you can encounter in a brick-and-mortar or online casino. Including Blackjack, of course.

Free blackjack games FAQ

? How to play free blackjack online?

Playing blackjack online for free is very simple. Just open our collection of free blackjack games and click one of the games. It will load directly in your browser with a balance of free chips (without any real value) for you to play with. You can then place a bet, hit 'Deal', and play blackjack as it is meant to be played.

If you are completely new to blackjack, you might want to read our guide on how to play blackjack to learn the basics. Free blackjack games are great to practice this, as in blackjack your decisions actually matter and influence your long-term results.

?? Do I have to download anything to be able to play?

No, you don't. All games in our database are played directly in the browser. You just need to load the game and start playing, no need to download or install anything. There is an exception, though. Some older games require Flash to be installed on your computer, but you can go around this requirement by simply choosing a game that does not require it.

?? Can I play free blackjack on my mobile phone or tablet?

Yes, of course. Most titles in our database of free blackjack games have been programmed with mobile users in mind, by using mobile-friendly technologies like HTML5 instead of outdated Flash, on which many older games are based. There is plenty to choose from.

?? Can I win real money in free blackjack games?

Free blackjack games are played with virtual chips without any real-money value. You play with the free chips you get when you first load the game, and these can't be exchanged for real money, regardless of how many chips you accumulate during your free play.

If you want to play for free and have a chance of winning, this can only be done by utilizing no deposit casino bonuses, thanks to which you can get a small amount of bonus money to play with. This money can then theoretically be cashed out if you win, although be careful, as there are generally quite strict conditions that need to be met.

?? Can I count cards in free blackjack?

Card counting is a method of keeping track of cards that have been used in previous game rounds to gain a statistical advantage over the casino. However, this requires the game to be played with a bigger stack of cards that are not shuffled after each round. This is not true for free blackjack games, in which the virtual stack of cards resets after each game round. You can, however, practice your technique of keeping track of the used cards.

?? What is basic blackjack strategy?
