Where to play Short Deck Holdem online

Phil Iveys short-deck success with the Triton Super High Roller Series has sparked interest among some poker players.

Short Deck Holdem or Short Deck Poker is not a new game and has been a popular variant of high stakes games in Macau for several years now. Even so, the online poker community only caught whiff of it after Phil Iveys win at a short deck event last week and Jason Koons $3.5 million at a Super High Roller in short deck format.

Short Deck Holdem is played like normal No-Limit Holdem, except that all cards from two to five are removed from the deck. This has the effect of generating more action, and the rankings change a bit. More information about the rules and the hand rankings can be found HERE.

Short Deck Poker is a very interesting format where action is guaranteed. The format is not so well known yet meaning you will find a lot of bad players at Short Deck tables. Familiarize yourself with the strategy and you will have a distinct advantage over your opponents.

Anyone who is interested to play short deck holdem or also called six plus holdem, can play it online exclusively with our partners from the GG Poker Network or also PartyPoker/Bwin are a good choice for short deck fans.

What is 6+ Holdem

Short deck or 6+ Holdem poker is a variant of poker similar to the traditional Texas Hold em. Unlike the traditional 52 card deck game, the deck size in 6+ Holdem poker is reduced to 36, hence the name short deck poker. The 36 card deck size is achieved by eliminating the 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s from the deck. This means that the aces can be used to make the low and high end of a Straight so instead of A-2-3-4-5, the lowest possible straight is A-6-7-8-9 in a game of 6+ Holdem poker.

How to play

In a game of Short-Deck Hold em, every player at the table needs to put a certain amount into the middle before the cards are dealt. Unlike the regular Texas Holdem where two players post the small and big blind, respectively. The round is initiated by the player sitting next to the dealer button, on the left and has the option to either call the blind, fold their cards or raise. Any player can use community cards to improve their hand. Three cards are dealt face-up on the board, making a flop if there is at least one call. If there are still players left in hand, then a single card is put on the board, face-up again. Active players will have the option to bet again, and this follows by another card and another round of betting until the showdown. Apart from the blind structure, the gameplay of short deck poker is similar to traditional Texas Hold em Poker.

The number of cards in the deck changes the possibility of the winning hand in the game of 6+ Holdem poker. In a game of Short-Deck Holdem poker, the weakest to strongest hands are as follows.

This is a combination of two cards of the same rank.

Two Pair

This is a combination of two cards of similar rank and another two cards of the same rank.

Straight: Straights are easy to hit in a game of short deck poker. A player needs five cards following each other in rank to hit a square.

Three of a kind/ Trips/ Set

To hit a three of a kind, a player needs to have three cards of the same rank.

Full house/ Boat

A player can hit a full house when he/ she has three cards of the same rank and two different cards of the same rank.

Flush

In a game of 6+ Holdem poker, a player needs five cards of the same suit to hit a flush.

Four of a kind or Quads

A player needs four cards of the same rank to hit a quad in short deck poker.

Straight flush

To hit a straight flush in 6+ Holdem poker, you need to have five cards of the same suit, with an ascending order of rank.

Royal flush

To hit a royal flush, you need to have a set of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of the same suit.

With this knowledge and consistent practice, you can gradually climb up the ladder of success in 6+ Hold em.

Beginners Guide

In Six Plus Holdem, also known as Short Deck, the amount of cards in the game is reduced and the hand ranking adjusted. The cards 2 to 5 are removed making it a 36-card deck, that leads to a whole new dynamic with more action guaranteed. Therefore the amount of starting hands in Six Plus Holdem is reduced to 630 possible starting hands, making it about 53% less than in Texas Holdem.

New Hand Ranking

In Six Plus Holdem, a Flush beats a Full House, because it is mathematically more difficult to hit, but still has to consist of 5 cards of the same suit. As in regular Hold em an ace can play high or low and even connect with the 6, which is now the lowest card in the deck. On A-6-7-8-9 the ace is basically the 5, making you a low straight.

10 min Basic Introduction to Six Plus

What you need to know

The Rules of the Game are the same as in No-Limit Holdem, but the hand ranking is slightly different. Its played with antes instead of blinds, of which each player has to post one before the flop and the BTN post an additional ante. This and a few other factors make the game play bigger than the value of the ante compared to NLH stakes. In short A high variance game that attracts action players!

FEATURED ARTICLES

In late summer 2018, when Six Plus Hold em was still in its infancy, we realized it was a game with a lot of potential and decided to dedicate time to study and master the game. With the lack of strategy content and resources there were at the time we started creating some of our own. We developed our own equity simulator to get a deeper understanding of the game and at this point thought there must be many more players out there like us, who really love this game. We decided to create a website and community focused solely on 6+.

It has been our goal since the start, to be the premier website and community for everything 6+ related and offer our players great and trustworthy deals with the softest games.
