Playing with the queen of hearts
Knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool
Who'll do anything for you
Laying out another lie
Thinking 'bout a life of crime
'Cause that's what I'll have to do
To keep me away from you
Honey, you know it makes you mad
Why is everybody telling everybody what you have done
Baby, I know it makes you sad
But when they're handing out the heartaches
You know you got to have you some
Playing with the queen of hearts
Knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool
Who'll do anything for you
Laying out another lie,
Thinking 'bout a life of crime
'Cause that's what I'll have to do
To keep me away from you
Lovers, I know you've had a few
But hide your heart beneath the covers
And tell 'em they're the only one
And others, they know just what I'm going through
And it's a-hard to be a lover
When you say you're only in it for fun
Playing with the queen of hearts
Knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool
Who'll do anything for you
Playing with the queen of hearts
Knowing it ain't really smart
The joker ain't the only fool
Who'll do anything for you
Laying out another lie,
Thinking 'bout a life of crime
'Cause that's what I'll have to do
To keep me away from you

"Queen of Hearts" is about falling for an unreliable lover; although you know it's a bad move, you are simply unable to resist them. The track makes use of gambling metaphors to represent this:

The Welsh musician Dave Edmunds was the first artist to record "Queen of Hearts." The song appears on his 1979 album, Repeat When Necessary. The track peaked at #11 in the UK, but Edmunds' label - Led Zeppelin's Swan Song - refused to release it in the US. Edmunds, who reached #4 US with his 1970 cover of "I Hear You Knocking," was hoping for another American hit and was not pleased when Swan Song held back both "Queen of Hearts" and "Girls Talk" (a song written by Elvis Costello that made #4 UK for Edmunds in 1979).
Edmunds had to watch as Juice Newton scored a huge hit in America with "Queen of Hearts" just two years later.

In 1981, country-rock singer Juice Newton released her rendition of Queen of Hearts as the second single off her album Juice.
I did [Queen of Hearts] live for about a year…Then I brought it to [producer] Richard Landis when we started the Juice album, Newton later recalled. He wasnt convinced at that point that it was a breakout song, but I told him I think this is a real cool song so we cut it.
And the singer proved herself right! Her version reached No. 2 both on Billboard Adult Contemporary and on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for two weeks. It also peaked at No. 15 on Billboard Hot Country Songs, making Newtons Queen of Hearts the highest-profile rendition.
But the songs success did not stop in the United States. Queen of Hearts is actually Newtons second-biggest international hit, securing Top Ten chart positions in Canada, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand, and South Africa. Newton also earned a Best Female Vocalist, Country, and Western category nomination during the 1982 Grammy Awards.
Sixteen years later, Newton once again recorded Queen of Hearts for her album The Trouble With Angels.
Queen of Hearts was written by Hank DeVito, who was primarily known for his pedal steel guitar work for The Hot Band, Emmylou Harris backing group. The song tells the tale of a woman who fell in love with an unreliable lover. Though she knows its a bad move, its already impossible for her to resist it.
It used gambling metaphors to represent this.
Youre just a heartache in disguise. Wont you keep my heart from breakin if its only for a very short time. Playin with the Queen of Hearts. Knowin it aint really smart. The Joker aint the only fool. Wholl do anythin for you. Layin out another lie, the song goes.
Welsh singer Dave Edmunds was the first artist to record Queen of Hearts for his album Repeat When Necessary in 1979. However, it was never released in the United States as his label refused to do so, but it peaked at No. 11 in the United Kingdom.
Just two years later, Edmunds had to watch as Newton enjoyed the biggest success in America with Queen of Hearts. Edmunds had also claimed that Newton stole his composition: She did pinch my arrangement, note for note, but Im not angry with that, he said.
