Will Virgin engineers come in the evening or weekends?

Your weekday installation time slot is 1-6pm as in they will turn up at anytime in that slot, not at a time of your choosing, weekends would be saturday only. They will once again have the same slots for arrival 8am - 1pm or 1-6pm (might be 4pm on a saturday!).

Just incase you don't already know they only install the modem, they will not connect it to your computer

They changed the rules slightly now

What the engineers are supposed to do is once they have done the wiring, they ask the customer to hook up the modem to the PC and then they direct them to a specific website.

If it works then the customer will be able to get online with no issue, if it doesn't the tech is then supposed to call a freephone number so the customer can get support for any connection issues straight away

If the person there for the install can't or won't hook up the PC the techs will leave

I had my initial install at my last place on a Saturday afternoon.

They just left me the modem, cable and a disc.

The disc talked me through setting up a username and everything.

It was easy - and I'm fairly dim!!

The disk is no longer required and in a lot of cases refuses to work when it gets to the postcode part.

Try using the following in your address bar activation.virginmedia.com

Why? I'm already connected.

My CD was not 'sent out' - it was handed to me by the engineers who fitted the cable.

Presumably if this is no longer what happens the engineers do not hand out cds!

There is an instruction booklet given with the CD inside the DVD bookcase. The first half is instructions for running the CD on your PC. At the back are instructions for people with Macs. I have a PC but I just followed the Mac instructions which consist of firing up a web browser and going to a website (can be done on any type of computer). The one thing I noted with interest is that one of the registration numbers differs if you are using Windows Vista rather than XP or OS X.

In any case I had a few problems with my registration, had to register twice and they put me on 2MB instead of 20MB before.

For area references 20-31 there are no installation CDs (unless you have a Wireless Router from Virgin)

Once the tech installs your broadband the first time you go online you are taken to registration webpages. Here you can create your username and password for selfcare, download PCGuard if you want it etc

You do not need a PIN number or registration code.

It is also now not possible to charge you for 20Mb but put you on 2Mb (or vice versa)

Booked a virgin media engineer for between 8am and 12pm. They arrived at 8am.

Only downside was I didn't think they'd arrive at that time so I was only just awake but not dressed.

Nice try Richard.

What sorcery is this?

I had a Sky guy come at 7:55 for an 8am-12pm appointment. Since I was in the shower at the time and missed his call and his knocking, he promptly left and I had to ring him at 7:59am to get him to come back.

Last appointment I booked the service tech phone person in India cancelled the appointment without telling me. I booked a holiday at work. When the finally did arrive after missing another 2 appointments the tech guy was atleast friendly and sympathetic.

Virgin seem to be much better in this regard than BT, they are usually on time. With BT you are lucky if they turn up!

Similar thing to me, had a 12-3pm slot, received a call at 10.30 asking if it was OK if he arrived early. Showed up at 11, was done in 30 minutes. Job's a goodun.

In my experience, VM and BT Openreach are quite good, it's though sly contractors Kellys that you need to watch out for. They left me without a phone line for 2 weeks before Orange sent a real BTO tech round
